Trap-Neuter-Return Program

Metro East Humane Society and Metro East Friends of Ferals are proud to team up to help communities manage and care for community cats.

We wholeheartedly believe in the power of Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) to make a significant impact on the lives of outdoor cats and the communities in which they live. Through this humane approach, we aim to break the cycle of overpopulation and provide a compassionate solution.

By trapping, neutering, vaccinating, and returning cats to their colonies, we contribute to healthier and more balanced outdoor cat communities

How It Works

A STEP-BY-STEP GUIDE TO OUR PROCESS

Submit your request for assistance through the form above. Someone will respond to your request within 2 to 3 business days.

A MEFOF volunteer will reach out to coordinate an available schedule date and provide you with all of the necessary information to be prepared.

Make sure that you keep your cat on a regular routine by feeding at the same time each day - we recommend feeding at the same time you plan to trap the cat. If you have your own trap, now is the time to begin trap training.

The day before your surgery appointment, withhold food until you’re ready to trap. At your regular feeding time, set the humane trap and wait for the cat to enter and the trap to close.

Cover your trap and transport the trapped cat to MEHS for surgery. Bring your completed surgery paperwork that will be provided. Plan to arrive between 8am and 8:30am and wait for staff to come to your vehicle to check you in.

Pick up your cat from MEHS between 3 to 3:45pm. You’ll pay at the desk in the lobby. Keep your cat in a temperature controlled area for 24 hours and follow the post surgery instructions.

Return your cat to the same place where he or she was trapped and open the trap. Watch as they return to their outdoor home!

Volunteer with MEFOF

Volunteers help by fostering adult cats or kittens, providing short-term holding before and after spay/neuter surgery, returning cats safely after surgery, transporting cats to and from appointments, and assisting with humane trapping.

Every role plays a critical part in protecting community cats and reducing overpopulation, no matter your availability or experience level.
