’Twas the night before Christmas and at MEHS, All the creatures were sleeping, they needed their rest. The stockings were hung in Kitty City with care, in hopes that a family soon would be there. The cats and the dogs were nestled snug in their beds, While visions of furever homes danced in their heads. When out in the run, there arose such a clatter, Lucy sprang from her bed to see what was the matter. Away to the window, she tried to waddle so fast, Nosed open the shutters and pressed her face to the glass. What to her wandering eyes should appear, A miniature sleigh, but where were the reindeer? With a little old driver, so lively and quick, Lucy knew in that moment, it must be St. Nick He whistled and shouted and called us by name “Now! Maddie, now! Ursula, now! Patience, and Croissant,
On! Cranberry, on! Pete, on! Dusty and Leonidas!" Out the front door, to the run we all flew, He pet us and kissed us and gave presents too. After the fun, we all shuffled inside, And joined all our friends - with St. Nick close behind. Once back inside I then turned around, He greeted us all, he loves pets at the pound. He was dressed in faux fur, from his head to his toe, And his clothes were all dirty with paw prints and snow. His cheeks were like roses, his nose like a cherry, His eyes how they twinkled, he made us so merry. He rubbed everyone’s belly and with a broad smile, Saw tails wagging, mouths purring - we’re glad he stayed for a while. With a wink of his eye and a twist of his head, I already knew I had nothing to dread. He spoke not a word, then got to work, He passed out donations, our community has not one jerk. Gathered 8 dogs & cats and they all struck a pose, All animals need homes, dear St. Nicholas knows He sprang to his sleigh, to his new team gave a whistle, And they all flew away like the dawn of a thistle But I heard him exclaim as he drove out of sight, Happy Christmas to All Pets and to all a Good Night!
